JK among states with worst school infrastructure

Srinagar: A recent survey at the all-India level has put J&K among the worst states in terms of school infrastructure and facilities for the students.
Out of the total 28,578 schools in the state, over 4,000, roughly 15 per cent of the total, are still functioning in rented buildings, the survey by District Information System for Education (DISE), a computerised database of schools across India, has revealed.
Among the bottom states in the list, the state has a meagre 3.7 average number of classrooms, as per the data.
While over 7 per cent of the schools have just single room, 26 per cent and 21 per cent, respectively, in J&K are with just three and two classrooms with the respective percentages of schools at the All-India level being lower than J&K.
Only five more Indian states have a higher percentage of schools than J&K.
Only 34.82 per cent of the schools in the state have a boundary wall, reveals the data with the all-India percentage of such schools being 64.89.
Although 94 per cent of the government schools in the state have set up girl’s toilet facility, less than 44 per cent of the toilets are functional, says the data.
Similarly, only a little over 44 cent of the boy’s toilets in the schools are functional out of the over 90 per cent constructed toilets.
Figuring among the bottom states in both the parameters, only 30 per cent and a little over 37 per cent respectively of the government schools in the state as per the DISE data have electricity and a playground.
Although over 62 per cent and over 57 per cent of the schools in J&K respectively have libraries and computers, the percentages are still lower than most of the Indian states.
Although the fact that over 90 per cent of the schools in the state have a drinking water facility is probably the only positive for the state, however with most of the Indian states having higher percentages of such schools, J&K has been again pushed to the bottom in the list.
While over 77 per cent of the school buildings in the state have been declared ‘good’ by the DISE survey, close to 16 per cent and over 6 per cent of the school buildings respectively are in need of ‘minor’ and ‘major’ repairs as per the survey.
Most of the Indian states have a higher percentage of school buildings in ‘good condition’ than J&K as per the survey.
