SRINAGAR: Rejecting the demand of the BJP, Mehbooba Mufti-led government has made it clear that there would be no holiday on Hari Singh’s birthday in the state.
The BJP has been demanding declaring of holiday on the birth anniversary of late Dogra ruler of the state, Maharaja Hari Singh, which falls on September 23, in view of the government already observing Martyrs Day in the memory of 22 Kashmiris killed by Maharaja’s forces in 1931.
However, the government on Thursday announced a list of the holidays which will be observed in 2018. According to the order, 25 holidays would be observed during 2018 in Jammu and Kashmir under the Negotiable Instruments Act. The list also included holiday on December 5, birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and on July 13, the martyr’s day. The ruling BJP has been demanding scrapping of these holidays. In the list, there is no mention of September 23, the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh.
Earlier, Vikramaditya Singh, grandson of Hari Singh, resigned from the PDP for not declaring holiday on his grandfather’s birth anniversary.
BJP Spokesperson Arun Gupta, said that the list of holidays for 2018 is of 2017 year. “So far no changes have been made in the list of 2017. There has to be some modifications in the list. Entire Jammu region is demanding holiday on Hari Singh’s birth anniversary,” Gupta added.
